The CILA Advanced Diploma requires you to have a thorough understanding of the principles of insurance and how these may be applied in the handling of claims. It also provides you with the opportunity to specialise in a type of claim, from a choice of: Property (Domestic), Property (Commercial), Liability, Business Interruption or Subsidence. How will I be assessed?
To obtain the CILA Advanced Diploma qualification you must pass the following exams:
1. AD1 – Application of the Principles of Insurance
3½ hour computer based essay exam comprising 5 questions from a choice of 6.
2. AD2 – Adjustment of Claims
3½ hour computer based essay exam comprising 5 questions from a choice of 6. The AD2 exam includes questions which are relevant to particular types of insurance. In advance of the exam sitting, candidates are therefore asked to select an AD2 exam paper from a choice of: Property (Domestic), Property (Commercial), Liability, Business Interruption or Subsidence. All CILA exams are sat using a computer and you simply book your exam sitting for a date and time that suits you.
Are there any entry requirements?
Entry to the Advanced Diploma exams is open to CILA members who hold the CILA Diploma.
How will I study and how long will it take?
The CILA Advanced Diploma qualification requires you to undertake your own reading and research in preparation for the exams. There is a syllabus for each paper and we recommend that you use this as the framework for your study. To help get you started the Institute provides a Learning Resources Guide. The recommended textbooks; Property Insurance Claims – Law and Practice and Law Made Simple. We recommend that you allow between 100 to 120 hours of study for each paper.
What will I learn?
• AD1 – Application of the Principles of Insurance
Studying for the AD1 exam will give you a thorough understanding of the appropriate processes to investigate, manage, quantify, validate and resolve claims, whilst applying the principles of insurance including insurable interest, indemnity, proximate cause, contribution and subrogation. You will investigate the cover that is provided by typical domestic and commercial Perils based and All Risks policies. You will learn about warranties, policy extensions and the application of average. You will examine how to validate a loss and address issues such as diminution in market value. You will research cyber insurance cover and learn about policies such as First Loss. You will also gain an understanding of dispute resolution and study the principles of ethics and Fair Treatment of Customers.
• AD2 – Adjustment of Claims
Studying for the AD2 exam will further develop your understanding of how to manage and settle claims in a just and fair manner. You will hone your ability to explain and support your rationale for settlement proposals. You will thoroughly understand typical policy wordings for elements such as the reinstatement memorandum and public authorities’ clauses. You will also gain an understanding of business interruption (BI) cover and the components of BI claim calculations. You will research building construction and obtain knowledge of CDM regulations, party wall legislation, asbestos management and the engagement of Contractor Networks. You will also explore how cyber cover operates. In addition, you will study the policy coverage and claims handling issues associated with your choice of exam.
